I teach Piano, Drums and Music Theory from beginner to advanced levels for anyone aged 5 - 95+. My home studio is currently located in North Richmond, Sydney Australia. For lesson enquires not in the area I also teach a number of students Australia wide and internationally through Skype. I am happy to accept students with no prior musical experience at any age (I have quite a number of adult beginners both on Piano and Drums.)
My main musical concern is to approach the lessons in such a way as to facilitate the goals of the individual student. I have both a University degree in music and a lot of experience with the AMEB/Trinity College London and am happy to teach in a well structured way centred around exam preparation for those who wish themselves or their children to have a formal musical education. I am equally happy to accept and teach students who just love to play music, who are interested in playing in social settings and who wish to progress at their own pace without the desire for any strict examination process.
Music is a language and like all languages it is possible to learn them through reading and listening. I highly encourage all my students to acquire competent reading and listening skills so that they may surmount any musical challenge they wish to undertake. I encourage this regardless of whether they are learning for fun, or wishing to pursue a career as a musician. It is extremely satisfying to listen to ones favourite CD and have the skills to learn the music by ear without aid of sheet music. It is equally satisfying to pull out sheet music you have never seen or heard before and be able to play it at sight.
Lastly I fully understand that ones goals may change with time. The student who begins learning just for fun may in time realise a deep passion for music which leads them to pursue a career in this field. Likewise one who starts out with the goal of a career can sometimes end up taking an entirely different road in their life and through music. I am more than happy to adapt my teaching style and method to changing circumstances and goals.
Please feel free to read some testimonials from current and prior students below. Thanks :)
"James is a wonderful teacher. My daughter has had other teachers with little progress but when James started to teach her, her technical skills improved greatly. His perseverance, patience and professionalism are some exceptional attributed we greatly admire. My daughter looks up to him not only as teacher but also a mentor who inspires her to have a deep love for music. We regret that we did not find him sooner." - Mery Ng (Glenwood, Sydney Australia.)
"James had been my kids' piano teacher for more than 2 years now. I would like to commend James' expertise, efforts and patience in lifting my kids' confidence and bringing up their piano skills to higher level. The results of their AMEB exams are the attestation to these and my kids' own praise of his approach to teaching which they really enjoy. I will highly recommend James to anyone wanting their kids (event adults) to learn or improve their piano skills." - Jasmin Delos Santos (Quakers Hill, Sydney Australia.)
"James Harris took over our son, Matthew’s musical education just over four years ago when he had showed little progress under his former piano teacher. Under James’ careful, encouraging and precise tuition our son has come on in leaps and bounds and now plays confidently and with enthusiasm. He looks forward to his weekly lessons (even theory!) with James and we can’t wait to see what the next few years bring to his playing. We highly recommend James as a trustworthy, reliable and most importantly, talented, teacher." - Frankie & Graeme Morgan (Kellyville, Sydney Australia.)
